The Beneficial Effects of Scrophularia atropatana Methanolic Extract on Myocardial Infarction in Rats

Background: Myocardial infarction (MI) is the leading cause of death among cardiovascular diseases. Reperfusion, most harmful phase, accompanied by inflammatory, oxidative, and apoptotic cascades in cardiomyocytes, impairing hemodynamic histologic status cardiac tissue. The Scrophularia genus well known for cardioprotective effects its species, showing beneficial impacts on blood pressure arrhythmias previous studies. Objectives: Regarding mechanisms involved MI genus, this study, we evaluated atropatana MI. Methods: Isoproterenol (ISO) injections (100 mg/kg, sc, 24-hour intervals) were used to induce rats. In intervention groups, two hours after first ISO injection, 5, 10, 20 mg/kg S. extract was administered gavage (24-hour three days. Cardiac parameters measured placing a catheter into right carotid artery left ventricle. Total antioxidant (TAS), malondialdehyde (MDA) lactate levels, histopathologic changes evaluated. Results: Induction declined median arterial (MAP), ventricular systolic (LVSP), total (TAS) levels. contrast, heart rate, ventricle end-diastolic (LVEDP), (MDA), levels elevated group. treatment increased MAP, LVSP, TAS significantly reduced LVEDP, MDA, Also, prevented post-MI. Conclusions: improving injuries suggest potential as complementary medication.
